FAQ
How are Experience Leaders recruited and paid?
Experience Leaders are referred to us by support workers from local charities that provide accommodation and/or support to people experiencing homelessness in Cambridge. Leaders earn £15 per hour during their initial training period, increasing to £20 per hour once they can lead activities independently. We use zero-hour contracts to accommodate each Leader’s availability. Leaders are paid for all hours spent in training, collaborating on tour development, assisting with tours during training, and leading tours and other activities. Staff at local charities work alongside us to ensure every Leader receives the support they need.
Is homelessness a problem in Cambridge?
Homelessness remains a pressing issue in England. According to Shelter (December 2024), over 354,000 people are currently experiencing homelessness nationwide. England also has the highest rate of homelessness among developed countries (OECD). In Cambridge—one of the most expensive and unequal cities in the UK and the world—soaring rent and living costs make it easy to fall behind on payments and lose one’s home. High deposits and rents, coupled with landlords choosing from many applicants, make finding independent accommodation particularly challenging. Many jobs in the local economy demand advanced technical skills or, (like many jobs) can structured in ways that exclude many people, especially those already experiencing exclusion. While Cambridge’s homeless population is smaller than in larger cities like London, hundreds of people in the city face homelessness each year, and many spend years rebuilding their lives. A range of local charities and council initiatives provide vital support—most notably our partner Jimmy’s. As Cambridge’s primary night shelter, Jimmy’s also offers move-on housing and other services. In 2023, Jimmy’s assisted 200 people, supported 62 into independent accommodation, and provided over 40,000 meals. By combining supportive accommodation with dignified employment, we can strengthen key areas—mental and physical health, personal security, and financial stability—creating a virtuous cycle that makes it easier to secure and sustain both housing and work.
How can my company get involved?
There a number of ways your company, society, organisation or group can get involved. We do always appreciate financial donations/sponsorship. Our aim is to become entirely sustainable on traded income, however in our early days we are still very grateful for grants and sponsors to help us while we build our presence. Financial donations particularly helpful to ensure we can pay Leader's for all time spent training, researching their tours and leading talks and workshops to inform people about the lived experience in Cambridge. As we're a new enterprise we also need to get our name out there and get customers! We'd love for your organisation to become one of our champions, letting your staff and customers know about us, booking some tours and inviting our Leaders to meet your staff. If your company has any skills or connections that you think could help us in our mission we'd love to hear from you.
